You probably already know that brushing your teeth twice every day is an essential step in preventing tooth decay and gum disease, but did you know you should be replacing your toothbrush every 3-4 months? It’s important to get a new one because the bristles can collect bacteria or become bent out of shape over time.

Shopping for a replacement can be overwhelming, though, with so many choices available. Many people find themselves wondering what kind of toothbrush is best- electric or manual? Keep reading to learn more about it so you can make an informed decision!

What Are the Benefits of Electric Toothbrushes?

If you’re looking to upgrade your dental hygiene routine, this might be the direction you want to take. There are many advantages to having an electric toothbrush, such as:

  • Efficiency. Studies have shown that these are 17% more effective at removing plaque.
  • Effortlessness. Because they oscillate on their own, you end up doing less work when using an electric toothbrush. This often makes them ideal for children or elderly individuals with mobility challenges.
  • Additional Features. Because they’re already battery operated, some brands include extra add-ons like a 2-minute timer to let you know how long to brush, for example.

If you do opt for an electric toothbrush, be sure you know what kind of replacement heads to purchase and where to find them. Not all stores carry the same brands and there’s no one-size-fits-all option.

What are the Benefits of Manual Toothbrushes?

Though they’re quite effective, not everyone wants or can afford an electric toothbrush but worry that a manual one won’t get the job done. Fortunately, that’s not the case! Some pros to having a manual toothbrush include:

  • Variety. You can find them in almost any size, shape, or color to meet your needs, whether you require softer bristles for sensitive gums or a smaller brush head to reach the back of your mouth, for instance.
  • Accessibility. Basic toothbrushes can be found in pharmacies, grocery stores, convenience shops, and even gas stations so it’s easy to find one.
  • Affordability. If you’re worried about your budget, it’s possible to find a reliable selection for just a few dollars.

If you do select a manual toothbrush, you won’t have built-in reminders so be sure that you set a timer or hum a few verses of your favorite tune to brush for two minutes each session. Also, be wary of pressing too hard when brushing because you can hurt your gums.

Either way, you’ll enjoy the fresh clean feeling from scrubbing your teeth with a brand-new toothbrush!
